The Dig Template Application
The Dig repository serves as a template for an excavation database which handles the following modules:
Areas
Distinct portions of the site. Areas are designated a single capital letter.
Features
Discrete portions of areas which display recognizable human modifications. Examples of features are pits, walls, structures, and installations. The definition of features is intentionally vague as some of them are only recognized in hindsight. Features were given human meaningful names e. g. Wall 23, Grave 5.
Loci
Any distinct three-dimensional entity excavated in a dig. Loci are typically made of a fill of a specific charectaristics or bound to a specific location. Loci were given unique integer values.
Small finds
These are artifacts retrieved from any specific locus. They are organized by their material: ceramics, stones, lithics, fauna, flora, metal, and glass. Small finds were given, in addition to locus and material designation, a basket number and an (optional) artifact number.
